Go backward a step
The dim yard lights of the power substation cast an eerie glow over the rows of humming capacitors and transformer banks, but Will's gaze was focused solely on Shelli, his heart ablaze with desire. As an engineer, he had spent countless hours in this very space, but never with her by his side.
Shelli, her nursing scrubs stained with dirt and sweat and a hint of transformer oil, gazed up at him with eyes that burned with a passion all their own. Her smile was a slow-burning fire that threatened to consume them both. Will's pulse quickened as he handed her a cinnamon dolce latte, his fingers brushing against hers in a spark of electricity.
The air between them crackled with tension as they sipped their coffee, the only sound the soft hum of the generators and the gentle lapping of the river against the shore. Will's eyes devoured Shelli's face, drinking in the curves of her neck, the tilt of her chin, the sparkle in her eyes.
Without thinking, he reached out and pulled her close, his lips crashing down on hers in a kiss that was both fierce and tender. The world around them melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in a maelstrom of passion.
Shelli's arms wrapped around Will's neck, deepening the kiss as she tongue-danced with his. The substation's main power transformers of 150MVA each hummed on, but it was just a distant echo to the beating of their hearts.
Will's hands roamed over Shelli's body, tracing the curves of her face, the swell of her shoulders, the softness of her skin. He pulled her close, his chest heaving with need as he deepened the kiss.
The world around them was a blur of color and sound, but Will's senses were honed to a single focus – Shelli. Her lips, her skin, her eyes – everything about her was intoxicating him, driving him to the brink of madness.
As they finally broke apart for breath, Will's eyes locked onto Shelli's, burning with intensity. "I love you," he whispered, his voice husky with emotion.
Shelli's smile was radiant, illuminating the dark space around them. "I love you too," she replied, her voice barely audible over the pounding of Will's heart.
In that instant, the world around them came alive – the transformers hummed louder, the 500kV busworked crackled louder, the reactors reacted faster, but all they could hear was the sound of their own hearts beating as one.
